Soon after, the cork oak forests, with granite outcrops and agricultural areas, come into view. We will come across border villages, such as Galegos, Monte de Baixo and Pitaranha. La Fontañera emerges ahead, an area in which smugglers used to prescribe coffee. Narrow, winding paths, sometimes on medieval paving, flanked by walls and hidden in the shade of leafy cork oaks were once the smugglers' paths. In the ascent to Pitaranha we see the Castle of Marvão and the Port de Roque Mountain Range, an escarpment that extends along the border and that serves as shelter to griffins colonies.
