The highest mountain in Portugal at 2351 m, this is the third largest volcano in the Atlantic Ocean and constitutes a landmark in the landscape of the Pico Island. The climb to the top of the mountain starts at 1250 metres above sea level, at the Visitor Centre (Casa da Montanha). Visitors should register here for control purposes, as required by law. The trek to the top of the volcano is tiring, since it involves a difference in altitude of 1100 m, but it is made worthwhile by the fantastic panoramic views from the top of the mountain. It should be noted that, on days with good visibility you can see all the islands in the Central Group of the Azores.
