The Côa Valley Grand Route consists of 222 km of marked trails, running from the Côa River’s headwaters to its mouth. It can be travelled in both directions. The Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve, Sabugal castle, the Faia Brava Reserve, the Côa Valley Archaeological Park and the Douro wine making region are just some of the highlights of this Route which combines nature and heritage. In the north west of Portugal, the Côa River flows through the districts of Sabugal, Almeida, Pinhel, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo and Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Connected by this river valley, the five districts complete a unique territory with a wealth of history, archaeology, culture and nature that is well worth discovering. Listed as a World Heritage site since 1998, the Coa Valley, is widely considered as the most important site with open air rock art.
