Canal de São Roque (Aveiro) » Parque do Areal / Angeja (Albergaria-a-Velha)
Grande Rota da Ria de Aveiro - Percurso Verde / Walking
This is the only stage of the GR59 that follows the margins of the Ria de Aveiro, in a section practically coinciding with the first stage of the GR57. With a starting point at the Cais dos Remadores Olímpicos (also known as Canal de São Roque), facing the historical center of Aveiro and even on the edge of the city's salt pans, the stage heads north towards the Cais da Ribeira de Esgueira. This is where the approximately 7km of footbridges over the Ria (Passadiços de Aveiro) begin, an infrastructure that allows the exploitation of an area of marshland often visited by species of birds that feed there. When arriving at the Rio Novo do Príncipe, the name of the channel that leads the Vouga River to the Ria, it passes to the north bank, entering a very special rural mosaic, built and shaped by man, called "Bocage". A habitat of great ecological and agricultural value, formed by fields of cultivation, pastures, fallow land and water lines, embroidered and limited by shrubby vegetation where the alders and willows stand out. It is through the paths of this labyrinth that the trail reaches Angeja, passing through its old pillory and culminating in the Areal Park, near the Vouga.
