The Eurovelo route 1 - Atlantic Coast Route in the central region is very long and includes 6 sections (from 11 to 16), with a wide range of cultural attractions and landscapes. The journey runs through the region's characteristic forests and pine groves where the Atlantic Ocean’s sea air can be enjoyed.

Route 11 begins at Praia de Santa Cruz, in Torres Vedras and continues a short distance from the coast as far as Vimeiro before heading towards Peniche's beaches. Here, this region combines beautiful beaches with agricultural landscapes and even vestiges of dinosaurs, before ending at the spectacular Cape Carvoeiro.

Route 12 allows you to spot the Berlengas archipelago. Following the route northwards the horizon is dotted with beaches until reaching Lagoa de Óbidos, from where it takes you to Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha, which are both worth a visit. The route ends at Foz do Arelho, where a dip in the sea is a very inviting prospect.

Continue on route 13, which runs along the Atlantic coast as far as Salir do Porto, São Martinho do Porto, Praia da Nazaré and S. Pedro de Moel.

PIt passes Penedo da Saudade and ends at Prais da Vieira de Leiria, where route 14 begins. This route crosses to the far banks of the Lis river and heads off towards Lagoa da Ervideira, Pinha do Rei and an area of coastline bathed by the Atlantic Ocean.

The journey continues in the city of Figueira da Foz, towards Praia de Mira. Section 15 ends in the city of Gafanha da Nazaré (Ílhavo). To reach the start of the next section, you need to cross the Aveiro Estuary on the ferry river link, which departs from Forte da Barra and arrives at São Jacinto.

The final section of Eurovelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route - in the Central Region, departs from the Dunas de São Jacinto Natural Reserve. Continuing on, the route always sticks close to the Aveiro Estuary as far as Ovar. You can continue along the route and head off to discover Portugal’s northern region.
