Lisbon Region - A Cycling and Walking destination

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, a modern city accessible from anywhere in the world, is a stone's throw from the Atlantic Ocean, beaches and a wide range of protected areas. Benefiting also from a moderate climate all year round, this is a region that can be explored on foot or by bike following paths marked on the land or according to your curiosity.

To enjoy the best of Nature, take advantage of the Network of Paths in the Protected Areas and get to know its treasures in detail, such as the Sintra Cascais Natural Park, where you can appreciate the cultural landscape of Sintra, which is a World Heritage Site, or relax on the beaches of Cascais. On the other bank of the Tagus River, enjoy the unusual shapes of the protected landscape of Arriba Fóssil [Fossil Cliff] of Costa da Caparica, which have been sculpted by erosion and are of great geological and palaeontological interest, or the beautiful landscapes of the Arrábida Natural Park, where the greens of the mountains blend with the blues of the sea and hide true sanctuaries. If you like birdwatching, don't miss the Natural Reserves of the Tagus and Sado estuaries, two important wetlands where you can observe a wide variety of species.

If you prefer cycling, we suggest you take the Eurovelo 1 – Rota da Costa Atlântica Lisboa [Lisbon Atlantic Coast Route] which covers around 200 km in this region divided into three sections - 8, 9 and 10. This coastal route crosses a wide variety of landscapes: from the Arrábida mountains, through Setúbal and Lisbon, to the Sintra mountains with a stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent which rises 150 metres above the sea, you will enjoy a succession of magnificent views. And why not include cultural heritage in your walk? Between castles, palaces, fortresses and museums, you will find such variety and wealth here that it is best to organise your itinerary well so that nothing escapes you. And to regain strength after the effort spent, nothing like trying the excellent regional gastronomy.

Consult our suggestions and plan your visit, or look for proposals from specialised companies. On foot or by bicycle you will certainly collect unforgettable memories.

Whatever your choice, the experience will be worth it! Consult the information available about the Paths, Programmes and Services provided by companies in the region.
