The beach of Vagueira is known for its arte xávega, an ancient art form of coastal fishing requiring beach nets, a boat adapted to cross beach waves and courage. From here to Costa Nova fishermen pier, come across a habitat of lagoon birds, namely herons, dunlins and plovers. In Costa Nova, the haystacks, dressed in vertical coloured stripes on white background, attract attention, as well as the lagoon activities of traditional fishing and seafood harvesting, when low tide, or nautical sports that the full tide invites you to try. The path transfers to the beachside till you reach the tallest lighthouse in Portugal, at Barra beach. Follow then to the lagoon bank of Barra. Occasionally, it is possible to see flamingos. Otherwise, you'll find the scenario of the coastal fisheries harbour, with trawlers coming and going. From there to Forte da Barra (Barra Fort), just cross the bridge and follow for the Oudinot Garden. Here rests the former codfish trawler Santo André, today a museum ship. Next is Barra Fort, built in the 17th Century in a place gradually stolen by land to sea, over centuries, today included in Aveiro Harbour area, in Gafanha da Nazaré.
